Here's a summary of the scheduled discussions for the Newcastle upon Tyne City Council meeting on 3 September 2025. The agenda included consideration of two motions to confer the honour of Freedom of the City. These motions recognised the contributions of Kevin Batey and David Faulkner OBE to Newcastle upon Tyne.
Freedom of the City
The council was scheduled to consider two separate motions to grant the Freedom of the City.
Councillor Lara Ellis was expected to propose, seconded by Councillor Barry Phillipson, that the council bestow the honour to Kevin Batey. The motion stated that this was:
In recognition of his eminent service to the city with 40 years service to The Hereditary Freemen of Newcastle as The Town Moor Superintendant and at the forefront of vital work carried out across the City's green spaces and their protection for future generations to benefit from.
The Freemen of Newcastle upon Tyne are an ancient organisation whose origins can be traced back to the medieval guilds. They played a significant role in the city's development and continue to be involved in various charitable and civic activities. The Town Moor is a large area of common land in Newcastle.
Councillor Habib Rahman was expected to propose, seconded by Councillor Colin Ferguson, that the council bestow the honour to David Faulkner OBE. The motion stated that this was:
In recognition of his exceptional leadership, civic service and voluntary commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals and organisations across the city over the course of more than five decades.
David Faulkner is a well-known figure in Newcastle, having been involved in numerous organisations and initiatives aimed at improving the city and the lives of its residents. He was awarded an OBE1 for his services to the community.
