The Appointments and Disciplinary Committee of Croydon Council met on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, to approve salary packages and commence the selection process for two key director-level positions: Director of Culture and Community Safety, and Director of Streets and Environment. The committee agreed to the proposed salary packages for both roles, which fall within the council's Chief Officer Grades, and resolved to proceed with the appointment process.
Appointment of Director of Culture and Community Safety
The committee discussed the appointment to the post of Director of Culture and Community Safety. This is a significant public-facing role that has been covered on an interim basis since the departure of Christian Aspin. The role is crucial for stabilising leadership within the Sustainable Communities Directorate. The committee was asked to agree the salary package for the position, which was set at Director Grade 2, ranging from £118,680 to £123,390, reflecting the national pay award applicable from 1 April 2025. The committee agreed to these recommendations, including the salary package and the undertaking of the selection process. The Director of Culture and Community Safety will be responsible for a wide range of services, including violence reduction, community safety, library and leisure services, the Museum of Croydon, the Coroner's service, and resilience and emergency planning. The role also involves advising on public health and community services matters and ensuring compliance with the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.
Appointment of Director of Streets and Environment
The committee also addressed the appointment to the post of Director of Streets and Environment. This is another vital director-level role that has been temporarily filled. The permanent recruitment of this position is intended to provide much-needed leadership continuity within the directorate. The committee was asked to agree the salary package for this role, which was set at Director Grade 3, with a salary range of £129,900 to £135,064, also incorporating the national pay award. The committee approved these recommendations, including the salary package and the commencement of the selection process. The Director of Streets and Environment will oversee five key teams: Environment Services and Sustainable Neighbourhoods; Highways and Traffic; Parking; Environmental Health, Trading Standards and Licensing; and Independent Travel, including SEND and fleet management. This role carries significant responsibility for public-facing operational services impacting residents, businesses, and visitors, and includes corporate leadership for the council's net zero and climate adaptation strategies.
