The Council meeting on 21 January 2026 saw councillors pay tribute to the late Dobiru Islam Choudhury and Simon Baxter, with numerous members sharing fond memories and condolences. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to debating and voting on motions concerning the proposed Chinese Embassy development and the impact of government changes to affordable housing targets.

General Purposes Committee - Thursday, 4th December, 2025 6.30 p.m.

The General Purposes Committee met to discuss preparations for the 2026 elections, local authority governor applications, and updates to the council's constitution. The committee approved changes to part A of the constitution and agreed to send the updated committee procedure rules to the full council for approval, unless further feedback is received.

Development Committee - Thursday, 27th November, 2025 6.30 p.m.

The Tower Hamlets Development Committee met to discuss a planning application for the redevelopment of the Genesis Cinema site on Mile End Road. The committee voted to refuse the application, citing concerns over heritage, design, residential amenity, and failure to comply with planning policies.

The Council of Tower Hamlets Council was scheduled to meet on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, to discuss a range of issues, including the submission of the local plan to the Secretary of State, petitions received from residents, and motions submitted by both the administration and opposition groups. The meeting was also scheduled to include a review of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee's annual report.
